Know what a piece adds to your wardrobe before you buy it.
One jacket looks better on paper and adds 8 outfits. The other looks plainer but adds 48. The book shows you how to count.
How to Build a High-Performance Wardrobe
The Extensive Fit, Fabric & Versatility System
“…so that you are no longer dictated by mere rules but rather swiftly and effortlessly go by guidelines.”
From the Foreword
What’s inside
A complete system for choosing clothes: how they should fit, what they’re made of, which pieces to buy, and how they work together. Six parts, 198 pages. Read it in order, or jump to the part you need. Parts III and IV also work as a reference to open again before you buy your next jacket, shirt or pair of shoes.
What you’ll learn
- Judge the fit of a jacket, shirt or trousers, and know which fit points matter most
- Read a fabric by its formality, flexibility and season, using 45 rated cloths as reference
- Decide which pieces to buy first in each category
- Count how many outfits a new piece adds to your wardrobe, so you stop buying one-offs
- Understand formality well enough to know when a rule applies and when you can bend it
- Build smart casual and business outfits from a small set of pieces, with 16 worked examples
- I
The Philosophy of Versatility
The one idea the whole book hangs on: what versatility means, what it doesn’t, and when to ignore it. It’s how you tell an unbreakable rule from a guideline.
- II
Know Your Fit
How to decide your silhouette for suits, sport coats, shirts and trousers, which fit points you need to get right, and how ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke compare.
- III
The Fabric Encyclopedia
Fibers, weaves and 45 cloths, each rated for formality, formality flexibility and seasonal range, so you can read a fabric the way you read a size.
- IV
Category Breakdown
Trousers, shirts, sport jackets and blazers, suits, shoes, ties and pocket squares: the styles, the construction options and which pieces to prioritize.
- V
Counting Versatility
The method itself: two candidate jackets scored against a full wardrobe. One adds 8 outfits, the other 48.
- VI
The Lookbook
16 outfits from smart casual to business, built from a deliberately small set of pieces, so you can see the framework working.

Questions, answered
Is this book for beginners?
Yes. It’s written for beginners and intermediates. If you already know a little about clothes, you’ll find it easier to move through, and the glossary of about 190 terms covers the vocabulary if you’re starting from scratch.
Which clothes does it cover?
Suits, sport jackets and blazers, trousers, shirts, shoes, ties and pocket squares: classic tailoring only. Knitwear, outerwear and athletic wear aren’t covered. The one exception is jeans, because denim is a staple cloth in classic menswear.
What do I get, and which format should I read?
A PDF and an EPUB, 198 pages, as an instant download. The PDF is made for a computer. The EPUB is made for e-readers and smartphones, because the PDF is a bit tedious to read on a small phone screen.
What is the Versatility Engine?
A free tool you can use whether or not you buy the book. You add a garment, and it reads the piece in two ways: first on its own, for formality, flexibility, seasonality and texture, then against every piece already in your wardrobe, with an outfit count and the reasoning behind every pass and fail. The book gives you the background to get the most out of it. Open the Versatility Engine
Is it a list of rules to follow?
It teaches the foundations and the rules, always with a nuanced take on them. Instead of just telling you what the rule is, it explains why a piece works: its construction, fiber, weave, texture, fit and color. That way you can judge new pieces yourself and treat the rules as shortcuts you can bend.
Does it tell me what to buy?
Not as a shopping list or a trend guide. It does go through dozens of priority pieces, explains exactly why each one earns that place, and shows you how to find your own priority pieces for your lifestyle, climate and style.
Is it for a certain age, build or style?
No. It’s for any man, of any age and build, who wants to dress in a classic way.
Will the book be updated?
The book is finished and has been worked through thoroughly, so no major update is planned for now. If a reader points out a spelling error or an awkward wording, I may correct it.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If the book isn’t what you expected, email contact@thethoughtfulstyle.com within 14 days of purchase and I’ll refund you.
What if the download doesn’t work?
Email contact@thethoughtfulstyle.com and I’ll help you get your files.
